The New Zealand College of Midwives is committed to protecting, promoting and supporting normal birth.

Normal birth provides the most favourable outcome in terms of physical and emotional wellbeing to the majority of women and their babies.

Midwives are the health professionals with a primary role in promoting and protecting the normal process of pregnancy and childbirth. They are committed to the health and well-being of women and acknowledge that normal birth has health benefits for the majority of women and their babies.

Home birth is a safe choice for many women. Women who have home births use less pain relief and have fewer caesarean sections and forceps deliveries than women who give birth in hospital. If you want to know more about this choice talk to your midwife or doctor. You can find out more on the Home Birth Aotearoa website.

Women giving birth in Primary Birthing Units also tend to use less pain relief and have have fewer caesarean sections and forceps deliveries than those who give birth in hospital.
